Campbell's Little BPA Alternative Secret

As of late there has been major contention in the food industry over packaging containing BPA. BPA stands for Bisphenol A and is quite a nasty chemical linked to spikes in hormone levels within babies, children, and nursing mothers. Obesity, cancer, and a myriad of other problems are slowly being tied to it as well. The American Chemistry Council even petitioned the FDA to ban the use of BPA in all baby bottles and sippy cups. Campbell's soups have lined many, if not all, of their canned soups with a liner containing BPA. They stated recently that they were going to reformulate their cans to not contain BPA anymore. The problem is that there are only two alternatives to cans: glass bottles and Tetra paks. Even BPA free alternatives may contain BPS which is a naughty cousin of BPA.

Tetra paks are simply cartons. They are considered one of the most sustainable packaging options ever produced. They minimize waste in all areas of production, consumption, and breakdown as compared to other packaging options. So what about glass? The use of glass is extremely cost prohibitive to a company who sells cans of soup for $1-1.50. It is a luxury within the packaging industry and is typically used for items that have high acidity like tomato sauces. Campbell's as of late has been mum as to their exact solution to phase out BPA. It'll be interesting so see what the result shall be.

Is this the end of the iconic Campbell's can?
